The Stained Glass of St. Paul’s brings to life many beautiful truths from the Bible — and colorful biographies of Chattanooga’s pioneer families.

Discover the great people, great dramas, and great truths preserved in the historic stained glass windows of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, including some of Chattanooga’s earliest citizens, such as:

  • Sarah Key Patten (1864-1958), Southern family matriarch whose love for nature helped to birth Chattanooga as an outdoor destination.
  • Judge Hugh Whiteside (1854-96), Chattanooga’s first native-born mayor.
  • William Perry Rathburn (1822-84), banker who helped finance our ravaged city’s economic resurgence after the Civil War.

Far from an accidental collection of individual masterpieces, these beautiful windows collectively also tell a much larger story, addressing some of our deepest questions about life and humanity, as interpreted from the Bible:

  • Why can’t we all get along?
  • Would a loving God allow suffering and evil?
  • Is there hope beyond the grave?

The co-author has labored to complete the research begun by his late father in this commemorative book. As you encounter the Bible’s precious truths and Chattanooga’s long-departed citizens in these windows, may you stumble as he did upon a “pearl of great price.”
